Blackface in 2013

Wow, so after making it's historic Vogue Italia Black Issue back in 2008. Vogue Netherlands has gone all 360 and released an editorial that features Caucasian models sporting Blackface in it's May 2013 issue.

Vogue
I'm sorry what year are we in, did I bump my head and  flash forward to 2013, are we still in the 19th century?

Seriously, after all the hard work Vogue Italia did to promote black models, this issue of Vogue Netherlands has really taken steps backwards.

The editorial titled 'Heritage Heroes', is supposed to honour Marc Jacob's work with Louis Vuitton and the tribal influences in his designs, as well as the styles of Africa-American cultural icons Grace Jones and Josephine Baker; bladee blah yadee yah.

If that was the case, why couldn't they get black models, why'd they have to use models with their faces painted black? It's just plain racist. Racism out in pure daylight; hidden behind the argument that this is art. Art my back foot! If someone walked down the street with their face painted black, they would probably be arrested for inciting racial hatred. But a magazine does the same thing and gets away with it. I just don't understand.

I even read somewhere that the spread couldn't be racist as the paint is black in colour, 'extremely black' so how is that blackface?

I had to slap my face when I read that, how naive can you be?

For those that don't know what Blackface is, let me break it down for you.

Blackface is the idiotic practise, where a Caucasian individual will paint their face black in order to depict a Black individual. It was popularly used back in the 19th century, mostly in Minstrel shows which would portray black characters as 'dumb coons'. Education done.

Wikipedia
Seriously what justification can you give this? What? It's disgusting that in 2013, people can promote blackface and sit there and say it aint a biggie.

And this isn't the first Vogue blackface controversy. Back in 2009 French Vogue, featured model Lara Stone in a 14-page spread, painted head to toe in black paint. Sigh.

Vogue
This just proves again how racist and very backwards the fashion industry is.
